- Ghostscript
- Before you install LaTeX on your system, it is a good idea to first install Ghostscript, which is a PostScript interpreter for Windows. It is common for LaTeX to use PostScript files as either input or output files while typesetting a document. Ghostscript comes in two pieces. First, there is Ghostscript itself, which is the PostScript interpreter, and then there is GSview, which a viewer for PostScript (.ps) documents. Download the following two installers and run them,
gs863w32.exe (Ghostscript)
gsv49w32.exe (GSview)
- MikTeX
- MikTeX is the version of LaTeX for Windows that we will use. To install it, download the installer using the following link, and then just run the installer.
basic-miktex-2.7.3248.exe
To get started learning LaTeX, download the following zip file. It contains a few introductory LaTeX tutorials and several advanced tutorials.

- WinShell
- TeXShell
- WinShell and TeXShell are simple "IDE's" designed for LaTeX. They make using LaTeX a bit easier. However, it is fairly straightforward to make any good text editor (such as Scite or Textpad) into an "IDE" for LaTeX. Just use the editor's tools facility to create LaTeX compiling, viewing and help tools.
- LaTeX Macros
- LaTable
- These are two small utilities that can be used with any text editor. LaTeX Macros makes it easier to find the right LaTeX typesetting command. LaTable makes it easier to typeset tables.
